Condor Preservation Tour
Scottsdale, Az - The majestic California Condor were near extinction in 1986 when only 22 birds lived in the wild. Today, through the efforts of the Peregrine Fund, the Condor population is approaching 300. Now Detours of Arizona offers an exclusive opportunity to connect with Peregrine Fund Field Biologists in the remote northern Arizona habitat that has been the natural range for these giant birds for thousands of years.
The land is as wild and majestic as the Condor. Headquarters for the Peregrine Fund is on the property of the historic Lees Ferry Lodge about 10 miles from the Navajo Bridge which spans the Colorado River. The Vermillion Cliffs to the north of the Lodge is an astounding land formation that rises over 3,000 feet above the red desert terrain and stretches in a seemingly endless ribbon of color. The in-depth orientation to the preservation program allows participants to accompany a Field Biologist to the top of the cliffs to one of the primary study sites.
The 4 day/3 night tour departs from Phoenix in a Detours Adventure Van® outfitted with ten leather Captain’s Chairs. Travel in comfort to Page/Lake Powell where the tour boards a raft at the base of the Glen Canyon Dam for an incredible smooth water float on the Colorado River. The river slices through narrow canyon walls that tower 1,500 feet overhead. Bighorn sheep are frequently seen along with water fowl, eagles and an occasional Condor.
Activities include a reception at Badger Point Overlook located at the top of sheer canyon walls nearly 2,000 feet above the Colorado River. Nearby the Kaibab Plateau rises above the vast terrain of the Arizona Strip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. Cruise in the Detours Adventure Van® through the ponderosa pine and aspen forest to pristine North Rim viewpoints.
The journey back to Phoenix is spectacular, driving through Navajo Nation tribal lands with a stop in Wupatki where the ancient ones, the Anasazi, lived. Walk through an Anasazi pueblo and witness the cultural roots of the Native American people of the west. Our route continues through Oak Creek Canyon and into the Red Rock country of Sedona.
Tour space is limited to minimize the impact on the Condor’s natural environment. Departure dates and tour descriptions are available at www.DetoursAZ.com and private departures can be arranged for small groups.
