New Hopi Hotel Receives Top Honors at RED Awards
The first hotel to be built on Hopi Tribal land in 50 years, the Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites, received top recognition at the annual RED Awards event. The event is the equivalent of the Oscars for commercial architectural development in the state of Arizona. They honor the Biggest, Best and Most Notable real estate projects and transactions in the state. Last year the “Most Challenging” Award went to the $380 million Phoenix Convention Center. Following in their large footsteps, the new Hopi hotel was the 2009 recipient of this prestigious award. Members of the Moenkopi Developers Corporation Inc. joined contractor representatives for BRYCON Construction on stage to receive their award on March 4, 2010 at the 5th annual RED Awards hosted by the Arizona Commercial Real Estate Magazine at the Ritz Carlton Phoenix. Over 450 people were in attendance to celebrate the achievements of architects, contractors, developers and brokerage firms who submitted projects for consideration.
The Moenkopi Legacy Inn, which can be seen at www.ExperienceHopi.com, was recognized with the “Most Challenging” Award because of the perseverance of the development team in the face of so many unique challenges. The construction team had to learn how to work with Hopi tribal laws and ordinances governing construction and other challenges included securing power and natural gas to the site as well as the delivery of water. The construction team was able to work through these and more challenges and complete the Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites, one of the most beautiful and unique hotels in Arizona.
The Legacy Inn features 100 guestrooms including 16 custom designed suites, a salt water swimming pool and whirlpool, a conference center, and an outdoor performance plaza. Hotel guests can enjoy unique features in the hotel including authentic Hopi artwork and a three story lobby with fireplace designed by a Hopi architect. The Kiva Garden and the third floor San Francisco Peaks Serenity Lounge provide places to relax and connect with Hopi traditions.
The Legacy Inn is part of the largest commercial development ever on the Hopi reservation. It is located in Upper Village of Moenkopi, the western gateway to Hopi tribal land in northern Arizona. The hotel, the new TUUVI Travel Center, and the new wastewater treatment facility that serves the commercial complex and village comprise a 24.5 million dollar capital investment. The Village elders envisioned economic opportunity and employment in a place of great need, and now this hotel is a testament to their faith in Hopi prophesy and future legacy. The project will serve as a catalyst to tourism in the Hopi Villages as well as an opportunity to share Hopi Culture with visitors from around the world.
