Lake Powell Level Good News for Boaters

Page, Az. - 2010 is shaping up to be another banner year for boaters on Lake Powell.  Dwayne Cassidy, Director of Tourism for Page Lake Powell, says "The reports that we are receiving from the Bureau of Reclamation forecast a continuation of lake levels that are ideal for boating. Last year was a tremendous year for boaters due to the combination of rising lake levels and the significant dredging that the National Park Service accomplished in the Castle Rock Cut area.  The reopening of the Cut last year was really welcome news to boaters because it is a short cut to one of the most spectacular basins on the lake.  The Bureau of Reclamation advises that the current lake level is 10 feet above last year’s level at this time of year and the lake will maintain levels well above the Castle Rock Cut elevation.”

This is a year for celebration at Lake Powell with the centennial anniversary of Rainbow Bridge being designated a National Monument.  Rainbow Bridge, an arching stone bridge higher than the nation's capitol and nearly as long as a football field (the world’s largest known natural bridge) was declared a National Monument by President William H. Taft on May 30, 1910. The National Park Service has scheduled activities to commemorate the event that are open to the public including some guided tours and workshops which will require reservations.  Information is available at www.pagelakepowelltourism.com or by calling the Page Lake Powell Tourism Bureau at 1-888-261-7243.

Tour boats operating from Wahweap Marina take lake cruises every day to the Rainbow Bridge area where visitors take an easy hike of about a half mile overland right to the bridge itself.  The National Park Service maintains a day use marina for boaters who want to walk to the giant arch.  Antelope Point Marina is offering special 4 and 7 day houseboat packages with a private guided tour to Rainbow Bridge and a slot canyon, a group photo at Rainbow Bridge, and a keepsake Rainbow Bridge coin and book.
